Senior Scientist

Dr. Christine Wickens is a Senior Scientist with the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada. She is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) at the University of Toronto, and is currently serving as Director of the Master of Science in Community Health degree program in Addiction and Mental Health at DLSPH. She also holds appointments as Associate Professor in the University of Toronto’s Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Dr. Wickens is completing her third elected term on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP) and is currently elected to the ICADTS Executive Board.

She also serves on the Drugs and Driving Committee (DDC) of the Canadian Society of Forensic Science, which acts as an advisory body to the Department of Justice with respect to issues of drug-impaired driving.
Dr. Wickens has a background in the areas of social, personality and health psychology. Through experimental studies, analysis of population-level survey data, and qualitative analysis of interviews and archival data, Dr. Wickens has conducted research on alcohol- and drug-impaired driving, driver anger and aggression, distracted driving, street racing, and the impact of mental health on driving. She currently serves as co-lead of the CAMH Driving Simulation Laboratory. She has been involved in quality assurance and evaluation of Ontario’s Back on Track remedial program for impaired drivers since 2013, and currently leads these activities. Dr. Wickens’ research, including one of her evaluations of the Back on Track program, has been twice recognized with the Dr. Charles Miller Award for the top research or evaluation paper presented at the annual CARSP conference. She has secured more than $4.3 million in research funding as Principal Investigator, and another $5.0 million as Co-Investigator. She has published more than 110 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and 10 book chapters and has presented her work at conferences nationally and internationally, including invited presentations to the Parachute Vision Zero Network, Arrive Alive, and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.
